Honors Experiences

Children's Media & Social Justice Seminar

For the spring semester of 2023, I am taking the Children's Media & Social Justice seminar. In this class, we learn about different forms of children's media and how/if they address various social issues that are prevalent in today's society. We have been given the privilege to tour the Contemporary Arts Center and the 1819 Innovation Hub as part of the course as well. For our main project, we have to come up with a form of media that addresses any social issue/topic and is aimed at a particular age group, with the goal of educating the age group on said topic with the intention of teaching children about many social justice issues at a younger age. My group and I decided to present a project that showed the various emotions that children may experience and associated it with a color and a monster. This was a way to reassure them that feeling all of these emotions is completely normal. I really enjoyed being able to learn how different populations are represented in the media and how children are learning information about the world and presenting information to children in a very creative way.

Self Designed Experience: Laya

As mentioned, I have been an Indian classical dancer for the greater part of my life. My friend and I realized that there was no classical dance club at UC, so that motivated us to start one! Our club consists of three different types of Indian classical dance and we held workshops for all three while integrating all of them into our dances. We choreograph dances together and perform them at events at UC and out of UC. This club has been a great opportunity for me to stay in touch with my culture and meet so many amazing people who joined it for the same reason.

Study Tour to Paris: From Neurons to Picasso

In spring of 2024, I took the 'From Neurons to Picasso' seminar which also consisted of a study tour to Paris over spring break. I was interested in taking the class as I have always been interested in neuroscience and I also love art, whether that be dance or drawing, so finding a course where I can see how the two interconnect was something that I really wanted to be a part of. Through the class, I got a deep understanding of the brain and its role in processing emotions, colors, etc. This course and all the materials from it were all very interesting and eye-opening for me. Of course, I also had the opportunity to travel to Paris as a part of this course, which was a life-changing experience for me. This was my first time in Paris and it was everything I could have dreamed of. We got to go to many different museums, including the Louvre, D'orsay, etc. and getting to see very well known sculptures and paintings was so cool. We also had a lot of downtime to explore the city which was very nice as I got to walk around a lot and really take it all in. I have learned that I really love this city and would love to come back here in the future!

During spring of 2024, I was selected to be a part of the RaMP program, where I got to work closely with a mentor from Cincinnati Children's and was able to learn several lab techniques including cryosectioning, PCR, and immunohistochemistry. I was also able to work with other people that are a part of this lab and this was a very valuable experience as I got to develop close relationships with everyone in the lab and got to learn a lot from them! I also learned that I really do like research and would like to continue in different fields of research as well.
